Another solid season on the books with amazing clean, ripe fruit being delivered to the crush pad.
Winter 2020 did not provide the cold temperatures to freeze the grapes for ice wine so we picked the remaining Riesling grapes in December to use for a late harvest style. We’re good with this. The rest of the winter season was a sleepy tiger with a very successful pruning effort and timeline by the crew. One of the changes made was to rethink how to cut and tie the Viognier so Ishmael and Robert decided to leave as many good canes on all the plants then trim and clean. We came with what we call the candy-cane prune method and we’ll let you know how it works.
Spring bud-break started right on time (around the second week in May) which eliminated any stress from receiving a killer frost while under budding conditions. A sooner than average warm up continued through May and June and gave us a lead in the average growing cycle graph.
Fruit set was right on the mark with an amazing result with the Viognier early cluster development. If our wine doesn’t make us famous, the invented Candy-Cane Pruning method will! Summer was textbook with blue skies and gentle weather patterns and a continuation of keeping the average temp days higher than the average. By August, the vineyards were ready for a trim and removal, about a week ahead of the norm.
Harvest began at the beginning of October for the sparkling grapes followed by the Pinot Noir rose' and then the whites. What was left were the reds and they were picked late but with plenty of canopy remaining and even some fair weather if we wanted more ripeness. We are now used to a pleasant pH recordings for all of our fruit. The winemaking process follows a limited So2 additions as stated before. The stability and clarity steps for the wines were textbook, with only a gentle filtering performed.
Now, we’re not bragging but here is another story of a successful vintage for us. That makes six solid performing seasons in a row… knock on wood, please. Can anyone who follows weather and seasons of vintages in the wine world share with us any others who share or better our current track record?
